The art of negative space
01 · Draw water before stone
Mark one area that must stay readable: an open water column, a sand path, a gap between stone groups, or breathing room around a focal stone. Make this decision before adding detail. In the studio, the Void brush creates an editable vector stroke. A protected stroke stays fixed; a coral outline marks elements that overlap it.
02 · Make an iwagumi focal point breathe
Begin with a dominant stone and smaller companions with a shared leaning direction. Avoid giving every rock equal size and equal spacing. Leave a visible interval around the main stone. Use X-Ray to check whether the silhouette still reads when texture and plant color disappear.
03 · Valley, island or triangle?
A valley uses two masses to frame an opening; narrowing the distant end of a sand path suggests depth. An island groups materials away from the glass so open water wraps around them. A triangle concentrates height on one side and lowers the opposite edge. These are starting points, not rules or contest scores.
04 · Protect the gap through growth
Compare Day 1 with Month 1 and Month 3, then change plant form and pruning frequency. Fast stems expand more than moss in this simplified model. When a protected corridor becomes crowded, move the nearest plant back or reduce its size. Actual growth depends on species, light, CO₂, nutrients and maintenance.
05 · Compare a deliberate change
Set a Before snapshot, move one stone or shrink one planting group, and switch Before / After. Study what happens to the main opening rather than adding more decoration. Export a PNG as a visual reference and JSON if you want to continue editing later.
06 · From a drawing to a living aquarium
This tool shows the front view only. It cannot measure real swimming volume, water circulation, stone stability, filtration or animal needs. Check these separately before building a tank. Tank-size choices change the framing proportions; the drawing is a composition study, not a construction blueprint.

Is VOIDSCAPE free to use?
Yes. The studio works without a studio account. It is a browser-based composition tool for learning and experimentation.
Are the growth percentages real predictions?
No. Plant scale changes under a small set of stated assumptions. Area, connectivity and clearance are approximate 2D visual measures. They are not biological predictions or validated aesthetic scores.
How do I save and restore a design?
Edits automatically save to this browser when storage is available. Save locally confirms a save. Save JSON downloads an editable backup; Open JSON restores that file. PNG exports the current rendered view. Browser data can be cleared, so keep a JSON backup.
Does a protected void prevent overlap?
It prevents moving or reshaping the void until protection is switched off. Rocks and plants can still enter it; a coral outline and the clearance metric reveal the conflict so you can decide what to change.
Can I use this on a phone or keyboard?
Yes. Tap a tool, then draw or drag inside the tank. The canvas remains above the tool drawer on small screens. Select items from the object list to edit their position, size and rotation without dragging. Arrow keys move the selected item; Shift makes larger steps.
What is sent to a server?
The studio does not upload your design or require a studio login. Designs are kept in your browser and exported locally. The site is hosted by Blogger; Google services and any existing advertising may process data under their own policies.
